It's time for
Obligatory DC Picture of The Day
I somehow ended up taking a lot of pics of the Washington Monument. A lot. Friends speculated that it means...um...something...what with the shape and all. I don't think so. It's just a stunning monument.
This shot was taken from the 40th step of the Lincoln Memorial, where MLK gave the I Have A Dream speech.

My friend Laura Picazo, who lives in Houston, and I lovingly refer to the Washington Monument as "The National Phallic Symbol."
Back when they were refurbishing it, Michael Graves designed a scaffolding with plastic sheeting to go around the monument. We refered to that as "The National Condom." I think some city in the Mid-West bought the national condom. I'm not sure if they erected it somewhere.
"National Condom", besides being a great movie title, reminds me of my Brooklyn friend who referred to the Appalacian Mountains as something like "a broken condom that let all that Western stuff happen". I took heat for being Western, Southern and Midwestern all at the same time.
Such fun.
My most famous poem from college days was about the phallic suggestion of church steeples. If the primary metaphor for the church in the New Testament is a bride, then why we are always strapping a penis on her? I decided, that rather than building a steeple, churches should...
wait for it...
dig a hole in front of the building and plan lovely shrubbery around it.
I know. I'm sick and need therapy.
I love you people.
You know what!!!!! Tim, I just figured it out!!!! The Bride is actually a gay man!!! That's why it is a penis!!!!!
